A decade after millions of players roamed streets capturing virtual creatures, Niantic has turned that activity into a powerful business tool. The company revealed that images collected through Pokémon Go have helped build a 30-billion-image, street-level map now used to guide delivery robots with high precision.

Niantic’s enterprise division, Niantic Spatial, has converted player-submitted photos and videos of public places into a detailed 3D model of real-world environments. The system allows robots to understand their surroundings and locate exact positions, even in dense cities where GPS signals often fail.

The technology is already in use. Coco Robotics has deployed it across its fleet of about 1,000 delivery robots operating in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Jersey City, and Helsinki.

Niantic Spatial’s Visual Positioning System (VPS) plays a key role in this shift. Instead of relying on satellites, the system compares live camera input from robots with its vast image database. This helps machines determine their exact location in real time. The approach reduces common delivery errors, such as stopping at the wrong building or location.

Company executives say the data collected from players acts as high-quality training material for the system. Over time, the model has evolved into what Niantic describes as a “living map” that continues to improve as more data is added. The system can also rebuild spaces in 3D and understand environments in detail, giving robots a better sense of direction.

Zach Rash said the technology helps solve a key problem in robotics, the lack of human-like judgment. Deliveries often fail in crowded city areas where GPS does not work properly.

This also shows how a gaming platform has moved into artificial intelligence and robotics. It proves that user data can create new business opportunities when used properly.
