Key Facts:

  • Richmond County, previously dependent on textile production, will host one of the biggest tech investments in the history of North Carolina.

  • Tax incentives were approved contingent upon Amazon’s job creation and investment milestones.

Key Background :

Amazon has announced plans to invest a whopping $10 billion in North Carolina’s Richmond County to build a cutting-edge data center and artificial intelligence (AI) campus. The move is one of the biggest single business investments in the history of North Carolina and is predicted to bring new life to an area that has endured decades of economic struggles related to the demise of its textile manufacturing sector.

The building will be a critical component of Amazon’s growing cloud computing and AI infrastructure, containing cutting-edge servers, networking equipment, and storage. Beyond the tech buildout, the company has pledged to support community development. It will work with North Carolina’s community colleges and universities to start up workforce training programs to prepare residents for jobs that are ready for the future in broadband, data center operations, and AI services.

Improvements to the infrastructure will also be a major aspect of the project. These are improvements to the water supply, upgrades to Rockingham’s sewer system, and the county’s fiber optic network expansion. Significantly, these public improvements will not involve extra tax levies for local residents.

In support of the initiative, Richmond County commissioners approved a 20-year incentive plan providing cash grants to Amazon annually. The grants are directly related to property and equipment taxes but are subject to the benchmarks that Amazon achieves, including the creation of a minimum of 500 jobs and achievement of its full investment commitment.

Governor Josh Stein praised the news, citing the state as a leader in technological advancement, specifically artificial intelligence. Since 2010 alone, Amazon has already invested $12 billion in North Carolina and supported more than 24,000 jobs. The Richmond County project is part of Amazon’s larger play to increase its U.S. data center footprint to meet increased demand for AI and cloud services.

This ambitious step not only confirms Amazon’s long-term stake in North Carolina but also paves the way for Richmond County to become a technological and economic hub in the south-eastern United States.
