Key Background:

Atlassian will buy The Browser Company, the startup behind the Arc and Dia web browsers, for $610 million in cash. The deal is expected to finish in Atlassian’s fiscal second quarter, ending in December.

The Browser Company was founded in 2019 and is associated with the development of browsers that can help users work more efficiently. In 2022, the Arc browser was introduced, which gives the user control over browsing and tabs and provides an in-built whiteboard. The dia browser is beta and is simply designed, which makes it easy to manage tabs.

Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said there is a need for better browsers that support professional work. “Most popular browsers are built mainly for browsing the internet, not for getting work done,” he said. He noted that Arc’s features, such as tab management, fit well with Atlassian’s tools like Jira.

Josh Miller, co-founder and CEO of The Browser Company, said that Arc’s features mainly appealed to professional users instead of the general public. The acquisition will allow the technology to reach a wider enterprise audience.

Before Atlassian completed the deal, other companies like OpenAI and Perplexity were also interested in buying The Browser Company. The startup has received investments from Atlassian Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and tech leaders such as Dylan Field, co-founder of Figma, and Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn.

It will be a merger of the experience of Atlassian with business software and The Browser Company with productivity-oriented browsers. According to Cannon-Brookes, the idea is to integrate Atlassian going forward with browsers and to make browsers easier and faster to use.

This move is meant to enable Atlassian to provide enhanced professional browsing solutions and enhance its software ecosystem.
