Key Background
Panasonic North America CEO and Chairwoman Megan Myungwon Lee has ambitious plans to localize 50% of the company’s EV battery supply chain in North America by 2030. The target is one aspect of Panasonic’s larger strategy to remain in alignment with American clean energy demand and benefit from federal incentives for local production under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
Currently, Panasonic’s battery supply chain is dependent on Asia to a large degree, from raw material and component purchases. Lee’s strategy is to limit this by creating North American battery manufacturing plants and alliances in the procurement of local raw materials. This also entails consolidating current alliances with firms like Tesla while being in a position to capitalize on increasing demand from other EV models.
Supporting battery manufacturing is not so much about incentives and more about making things more resilient. Supply chain failures around the world in recent years showed the vulnerability of long supply chains. By locating large operations close to America’s largest automakers, Panasonic is better able to manage costs, reduce carbon emissions associated with shipping, and create shorter innovation cycles in battery tech.
Megan Myungwon Lee believes that this makeover will make Panasonic competitive in the days to come. It also helps the U.S. government achieve its aspiration of building a dominant clean energy economy. The plan fulfills the IRA requirements that at least 40–50% local manufacture of important battery materials be set up to be eligible for tax credits.
This localization initiative is a new page in the Panasonic book, where sustainability meets vision and proximity. As the company is undertaking a regulation compliance journey led by Megan Myungwon Lee, it is also positioning itself for global players in the EV business. It reaffirms Panasonic’s path of supply chain resilience, clean energy, and electric mobility leadership in the decades to come.
