Fusion power startup Thea Energy has received a $20 million grant from the US Department of Energy’s ARPA-E programme to support manufacturing of its modular high-temperature superconducting magnets, the company said this week.

The funding will help Thea scale production of the magnets, which are key but costly components in magnetic confinement reactors, one of the two main approaches startups are using to pursue commercial fusion power. In such reactors, strong magnetic fields contain and compress plasma, heating particles until fuel can fuse and release energy.

Thea’s reactor design is based on a stellarator, a twisted, tube-like structure that helps confine plasma more effectively. Most stellarators require magnets built to match these complex shapes, making them expensive to produce. Thea has aimed to cut costs by using fewer magnet variants, relying on four templates for its 12 large magnets and identical units for more than 300 smaller magnets that fine-tune the plasma.

The smaller magnets, arranged around the reactor’s edge, are controlled by software, an approach the company says allows for more flexible construction tolerances and lower manufacturing costs.

Thea ranks among the most well-funded fusion startups globally. The company raised $100 million in a funding round in May, adding to a $20 million Series A round secured in early 2024. Like several peers in the sector, Thea plans to build a commercial-scale fusion power plant by the mid-2040s.
