Key Background

Nick Adams, born Nicholas Adamopoulos, started his political career as one of the first councillors in Sydney’s Ashfield suburb. Nick was a deputy mayor at the young age of 21, the youngest ever to be elected as a deputy mayor. While a councillor, there have been many controversial proposals such as pigeon-eradication because of fears about bird flu and DNA testing for dog-fouling culprits. His regular absence from council business for foreign speaking tours was condemned by other councillors and the general public.

In 2012, Adams emigrated to America and began anew as a right-wing writer and commentator. He subsequently became a US citizen in 2021. Using his “alpha male” persona, Adams created a popular online following committed to masculinity, patriotism, and conservativism. He started the Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness (FLAG), an organization promoting civic education, and a free-speech nonprofit 1A Warriors. His books, like Green Card Warrior and Retaking America, adopt strong borders, conservative values, and traditional masculinity in profound respect.

Re-election hopeful Donald Trump named Adams as the next U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia in July 2025. Trump called Adams a values-oriented and loyal citizen, an “incredible patriot.” The appointment was controversial from the start, most loudly over Adams’ sparse resume of foreign diplomatic experience. Some questioned how his constant talking and performing social media personality would be accepted in Malaysia, a Muslim nation and diplomatically attuned Southeast Asian country.

As Adams was “deeply humbled and proud” at the nomination, he is still waiting for confirmation by the U.S. Senate. After that, he will occupy a very important diplomatic role at a time when relations between the United States and Malaysia are within the larger context of Indo-Pacific geopolitics and Chinese threat.
